The Life and Legacy of Latoya S. Cameron
Latoya Sherrelle Cameron
Born February 3, 1977,Toya as she is affectionately known, was a pure soul who lived a life of compassion, honesty, and service. With a vivacious spirit and a warm smile, Toya's goal was to inspire change and growth in everyone that she encountered. Toya poured love into the youth, her peers, family, and friends near and far. She viewed complacency as the enemy. She encouraged all to strive for greatness and uplift others along the way. She truly believed in pursuing the best version of oneself.
Toya was a 1995 graduate of Shaw High School in Shaw, MS where she was a member of the marching band, National Honor Society and was elected Homecoming Queen. She attended Delta State University receiving her Bachelors Degree in English and Pre- Law in 1999. She received a Master of Science degree in Elementary Education from Mississippi Valley State University and a Master of Education in School Counseling from Freed-Hardeman University.
“Carpe Diem” was her life’s mantra and all who knew her can attest to the joy she found in each day. One of her many life’s passions was traveling around the world creating memories with her close friends and loved ones. To know Toya was to love her. She leaves a legacy of infectious laughter and bold, honest truth. She possessed a tremendous love and commitment for children and leadership through her dynamic educational career that spanned 18 years. She began her service as an English teacher in the Shaw School District. She later moved to Memphis, TN, where she was employed by Shelby County Schools as a Teacher and later a Professional School Counselor.
She made a lasting imprint on the hearts of her Cordova High School family. To the Wolfpack family, she served as 9th Grade Counselor and College & Career Counselor. She received accolades for the implementation of innovative techniques that connected students with scholarship and career options. She also served as the Beta Club and Senior Trip Sponsor. Because of her undying support and love for Wolfpack football, she was deemed Academic Compliance Advisor for the team, ensuring that players were compliant with regulations aiding in scholarship opportunities. She also ventured into entrepreneurship through launching Crowned Locks Luxury Hair and had recently completed certification to become an Independent Claims Adjuster.
Sadly, Toya's earthly journey came to an end January 27, 2020. Although her years on earth were few, her impact was mighty as she cultivated an environment of scholarship and service which produced successful, motivated, productive, and community conscious citizens. As it was important to Toya to empower the youth through promoting higher education and the attainment of scholarships, the family and friends of Latoya S. Cameron vow to continue her legacy of service through providing substantial scholarships in her honor.
